February Member of the Month: BRUCE HURST

We are so proud to say that Bruce is our February Member of the Month. He has been at CFTC for almost a year and a half, has lost 30lbs., and is getting stronger everyday. We love Bruce and are so happy to have him part of our community.

How long have you been working out at CrossFit Tri County?
I have been doing CrossFit since October of 2012.

Why did you decide to join?

A friend of mine has been dong CrossFit in North Carolina and she told me I should try it. I had been doing P90X and various other workouts for a year or so but felt that the routine became monotonous.  I wasn’t seeing any improved results and subsequently stopped.  The concept of Community is something I really embrace.  Having played organized sports my whole life I feel comfortable in a team (community) environment.  It was a blessing to come to CFTC as my first Box because the sense of together is always felt, that truly is motivating.

What was my your first day of On Ramp like?

I have to say I was a bit intimidated for my first day.  I did not really know what to expect and did not want to fail at the exercises.  Being about 30 lbs overweight didn’t help either.  Yet the day was great, right from the start I felt as if CFTC was going to be a great fit for myself.  The class was motivating, fun  and challenging.

When did you know that CrossFit Tri County was for me?

That’s interesting, I was told by Coach Scott, I believe, that the most effective workout schedule is 3 days on 1 day off.  My first real class, at 7am, I was all alone, and the work out was a “Chipper” I believe it was called.  Coach Scott took Pity on me when I got to the set sets, I was hurting for a while, but I stayed true to the 3 days on and 1 off, at the end of the day off I was looking forward to getting back at it, so I’d say that was when I realized Cross Fit was for me.

What has been your greatest achievement since you started?

There have been a few milestones reached since I started CFTC.  The first and probably the most rewarding is that I lost 30 pounds in about 5 months, and have kept the weight off since, (My Tailor loves you guys!), Third and by no means the last, Standing on the Podium with Danielle and Anne in our Minions outfits winning the Throw down and the Best costume award was simply Awesome!!!!!

How has CFTC Changed your Life?

I just plain and simply feel so much healthier than I have in a long time.  Having gone through a bout of cancer in 2005, I have always been conscious of how I feel mentally and physically.  Cross Fit has really helped me on both aspects.  I know I’m stronger than I have been in years and that is a great feeling.

What words of encouragement would you give a newbie or someone hesitant to try CrossFit?

I would let them know that Cross fit is a program that lets you develop at your own pace but with a supportive community rooting you on at all times. It will take you out of your comfort zone for sure, but will be a truly rewarding experience.  It will be life altering in a positive way.  People around you will notice and you will feel so much better about yourself.
